Mayor’s Update: May Council Meeting

4/28/2023

Texas Local Government Code §22.006 states that newly elected officials for a Type A-General Law City may qualify and assume duties of office after the 5th day after the election not counting Sundays. The resulting day is the 6th day after. Officials may not take office until the canvass is complete unless the election was canceled. The earliest the newly elected officials can take office would be on Friday, May 12, but having a Friday night meeting can be difficult. Therefore, the City of Blanco May meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 6 p.m.

Mayor’s Update: Pecan Bottom

4/20/2023

On November 9, 2021, the Blanco City Council unanimously moved to designate the Pecan Bottom as a nature park and the area was no longer mowed to allow us to identify the different types of vegetation in the area. In the past, vendors for Market Days and Lavender Festival have parked their vehicles on the Pecan Bottom so we could not tell what was growing. There are many grasses and flowers already blooming such as buffalo grass and primroses. We’ve spotted a small pecan tree! The City is working together with Keep Blanco Beautiful, Blanco Women’s Club, Highland Lake Master Naturalists, the Blanco County Rotary Club, and others to begin working on turning the area into a park. Trails have been mowed across the Pecan Bottom already and seeds were spread. The next step is to create natural structures for a playground such as stumps and boulders for climbing, hiding, and exploring. The idea behind creating natural structures is so that if and when there is a flood again and it washes away, the structures won't be hard to replace. Mayor Pro Tem Connie Barron will be donating her monthly council stipends, $2,200 ($100 was donated to the Council Scholarship each May) to this project to help maintain it. The Women’s Club has donated a little library to Spinnerz Laundromat and this will be placed on the park’s side so citizens can enjoy a book while relaxing in the park. We are excited about this new green space in our community and look forward to what sprouts up next.

Mayor’s Update: HWY 281 Historic Preservation Town Hall

4/10/2023

The HWY 281 Task Force will host a Town Hall on Thursday, April 13 at the Old Blanco County Courthouse. The doors will open at 5:30, and the presentation will begin at 6 p.m. where I will provide a brief update. However, this Town Hall will mainly focus on the historic preservation aspect. TxDOT historians have begun researching and documenting buildings, landmarks, cemeteries, rock fences, etc. of historic significance. We want to make sure we have documented all the history and need your help. We will have large maps for citizens to identify historical landmarks, ranches, and structures along HWY 281. We will also have scanners available for any photographs and/or documentation of historic places on your property. The expansion to HWY 281 is coming; TxDOT has begun looking at relief routes at the request of the City and having all the historic homes, rock fences, cisterns, barns, smokehouses, springs, creeks, etc. documented will help this process significantly. I hope to see everyone at the Town Hall on April 13.
